The race

Course: Point-to-point across all five boroughs, starting on the Verrazzano and finishing in Central Park.

Elevation: 810 ft (246 m) up, 824 ft (251 m) down, the bridges do the damage.

Typical weather: Mean race-day temperature around 47°F (8°C), among the best racing conditions of any Major.

Non-guaranteed drawing

Anyone can enter: no qualifying time, no NYRR membership, no prior races required. NYC has not announced its 2027 window. Projecting from the 2026 cycle, expect applications around February 4 to 25, 2027 with the drawing held about March 4. Acceptance runs roughly 3 to 4% and has collapsed in recent years as demand passed 125,000 applicants.

Abbott WMM Race Draw

NYC takes part in the Abbott WMM Race Draws, which put 250 guaranteed places into the 2026 edition. The 2027 draw has not been announced. Abbott opens all its draws together in early January, so expect applications to open then with the NYC draw made in spring.

NYRR 9+1

Nine qualifying NYRR races plus one volunteer shift in a calendar year earns guaranteed, non-complimentary entry to the following year's marathon: your place is secured but you still pay the entry fee. If you completed the requirement during 2026 you also need an active NYRR membership as of December 31, 2026 to claim your 2027 place. From the 2027 program year the program is capped at the 15,000+ members selected in an annual drawing: hold an active membership by September 16, 2026 and keep it through drawing day on October 1, because lapsing in between disqualifies you. The drawing is free to enter, applications run September 17 to 29, and those selected pay $99 including processing to become 9+1 Passholders. Completing the 2027 program year earns entry to the 2028 race, not 2027. The drawing is not the only way in: NYRR reserves complimentary passes for its Race Free program and non-complimentary passes for runners approaching Streakers and 15+ status. NYRR is also retiring its Member Plus and Family Plus tiers, moving existing members to standard tiers from August 19 with a prorated refund, and giving all members two-day advance registration from the January to March 2027 race drop on October 14, 2026.

Time qualifier

NYRR members with a qualifying time hold guaranteed entry, non-complimentary like 9+1, so the place is secured but the entry fee still applies. Non-NYRR runners have a separate and much smaller allocation, applied for in a window of about one week, so the timing matters more than the standard.

Charity entry

NYC has one of the largest charity programs of any Major, including Team for Kids. Minimums run from roughly $3,000 to $4,500 and up depending on the partner. With drawing odds around 3%, this is the most dependable route for most out-of-town runners.

Official tour operator

Official international tour operators hold guaranteed places sold with hotel and transfers at a significant premium. NYRR also offers a Philanthropic Membership route, and a 15-year legacy entry for runners who have completed 15 or more NYC Marathons.
